The LAUSD Board will vote on a gun violence resolution from Board President Monica Garcia (BD2), Vice President Nick Melvoin (BD4) and Board member Kelly Gonez (BD6), calling on the state and federal government to enact stricter gun laws, including banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, universal background checks, and licensing and training gun owners. It also calls for increased funding of mental health services and school emergency preparedness.
The resolution also calls on the LAUSD Superintendent to create a Safe Schools Task Force comprised of parents, students, teachers, administrators, other school-based staff, community organizations, law enforcement experts and district personnel to meet quarterly to review and evaluate the effectiveness of District-wide safety and security plans.
Separately Board Members Richard Vladovic (BD7) and Ref Rodriguez (BD5) are introducing a resolution to increase security at schools entrances and exits.
The Board will also vote on a resolution calling on LAUSD healthcare providers to decrease wait time for teachers to receive healthcare, especially during flu season. It calls on the California Department of Managed Health Care to review the quality and accessibility of care.
LAUSD will also receive a financial report and an update on its Fiscal Stabilization Plan to ensure that LAUSD remains solvent for the next three years.
