LAUSD will vote on a postponed and subsequently amended resolution originally introduced by Board Members George McKenna (BD1) and Scott Schmerelson (BD3) on June 19 authorizing the superintendent to submit language to the County for a parcel tax to appear on the November 2018 ballot. The $150 million a year parcel tax would reduce the projected 2020 deficit.
Board Vice President Nick Melvoin (BD4) and Board President Monica Garcia (BD2) are introducing the Putting Kids First Means Keeping Families Together resolution demanding the immediate end to immigration policy leading to separation of children and families. Students and employees impacted by family separation immigration policies would receive access to health and mental health services, and it directs the Office of General Counsel (OGC) to investigate the creation of a program to provide pro bono legal counsel to district student and families suffering separation due to federal immigration policies.
