Miguel joins Speak UP as Regional Advocacy & Political Outreach Director after many years of serving as a strong advocate of educational and social justice in the community.  Miguel grew up attending LAUSD schools in Board Districts 5 and 2 where he was raised. At age 14, he volunteered for his first political campaign, igniting his passion for public service. He attended California State University, Northridge, majoring in Political Science and minored in Chicano/a Studies, where he represented 36,000 students as Student Body President. Miguel served at Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa office and worked for Eric Garcetti's mayoral campaign. Most recently, he worked as a staff member for LAUSD Board District 5 and for Hillary for America 2016 Presidential campaign as well as for 49th District Assembly member Ed Chau. He taught for four years in Pico-Union and South LA through Teach for America. At Speak UP, Miguel mobilizes parents and community members to develop the organizing skills they need to be self-advocates and to create real change in the public school system. In his own words, “change comes when people stand up, speak up, and no longer want to stick to the status quo.” Miguel has a Master’s in Education from Loyola Marymount University.
