CALIFORNIA EDUCATES 1 IN 7 STUDENTS IN THE U.S.
Fewer than half of all California public school students can read at grade level.
President-elect Donald Trump and his nominee for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos both support school choice, a key aspect of Speak UP’s platform, prompting some Speak UP members to ask, could this possibly be a good thing? The answer is, decidedly and emphatically -- no. And the reason lies in Speak UP’s other core values of accountability and equity for all kids.
There is a huge chasm between the kind of quality school choice that we have here in California and the type of unregulated and unaccountable choice promulgated by Trump and DeVos, the main architect behind the abysmal failure of a school system in Detroit.
My friends often accuse me of laying all the ills of our country at the doorstep of our inadequate public school system. So it should come as no surprise that in the aftermath of this chilling presidential election, I find myself turning, once again, to improving education as a prescription for a more fair and successful society.
The mission of Speak UP is to engage, educate and activate parents and community members to advocate for excellent, equitable public education at their children’s schools, in their communities, with elected representatives and at the ballot box.
